I heard breastfeeding was a natural form of birth control. Is this true?

Under certain conditions, it can be nearly as effective as the birth control pill (people do get pregnant on the pill, you know!). It is called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method of family planning, Ecological Breastfeeding, or Natural Child Spacing:

-Baby is under 6 months old.

-You have not had a menstrual cycle.

-Baby is not eating solid foods.

-Baby is nursing at least every 4 hours during the day and every 6 hours at night.

-All or nearly all of baby's nutritional and non-nutritive sucking needs are being met at the breast (i.e. no pacifiers or supplemental bottles of formula).

';Chance of pregnancy is practically zero during the first three months, less than 2% between 3 and 6 months, and about 6% after 6 months (assuming mom's menstrual periods have not yet returned).'; - from http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertil鈥?/a>I heard breastfeeding was a natural form of birth control. no not at all dont risk it lolI heard breastfeeding was a natural form of birth control. Is this true?
absolutely NOT
i have heard that too, but you never know for how long, and who its works for and who it doesn't , so not the smartest birth control this one, opt for a back up ...
It is a natural form of birth control, however, this only *sometimes* works when you are FULLY feeding: ie no weaning or supplement feedings allowed. However, don't put all of your trust into this method unless it won't be the end of the world if you become pregnant again because it obviously doesn't work for every woman. It is considered a form of birth control to some because it tends to hold off your periods, HOWEVER, you will ovulate before you get your periods back and this could be at any time! It may work for a few months for one woman and it might not work at all for another, so if you are breastfeeding and you do NOT want to become pregnant again (at least not yet), then you must use another form of birth control. You need to be aware that many hormonal BCs may affect your milk supply or may end up in your milk so choose wisely if you go the hormonal route.
sure is but not one you want to count on when you already have a little baby at home...best rely on something more solid
No its not. Lots of people get preggo breast feeding.
makes ur child smarter
If you breast feed regularly, then your hormones continue to make the breasts produce milk. This causes you to have a hormonal profile that would make it unlikely to be able to get pregnant again. That having been said, like any birth control method, it is not fool-proof.
no,on the contrary,u can become pregnant while breast feeding, use precautions
It can be for some women but I wasn't one of them. I became pregnant while breastfeeding my daughter and I now have two children 14 months apart from each other. We were happy to have the second child but if you do not want another child so quickly then plan some kind of birth control.
That's an old old tale, you can for sure get pregnant while breastfeeding! Any Doctor will tell you that!
no being pregnant is the only 100% form of birth control.
yes.. true.. but only till some time till 6 weeks.. i read it somewhere..
